5 months down, 7 months to go! Already tons of people taking the pledge are well over 25 books, some are even now taking #100BookPledge. Now that’s really committing time to reading.
For me (@shanparsons) my favourite time to read is in the summer, outside in the sunshine. I can still remember reading Room last summer on a picnic blanket, under a nice blue sky… and crying my eyes out. (Everyone who’s read Room, I’m sure you can relate.)
It’s hard to pick the best type of book to read in the summer. Some people prefer something light and fun, maybe a good, quality chick lit book. Others go for thrillers, fast-paced mysteries; books that really pull you in. And others decide to tackle that huge 900-page novel that they’ve been putting aside for months.
We decided to asked our in-house pledge team to name one book (or two, or three) you should read this summer:
Michael – 40 books in
“For this summer I’d recommend Before I Go to Sleep – there is some great buzz about this one.”
Emma — 35 books in
“Even though it’s not out til early August I think the best summer read this year is The Single Girl’s To Do List by Lindsey Kelk.”
Jessica — 33 books in
“For whatever reason, I love to read thrillers or mystery almost exclusively in the Summer. Every year since I was 11 or 12 I’ve read Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. There’s just something that screams SUMMERTIME about a mystery on an island… Another prerequisite for my summer book club of one: books about summertime. The Summer of Naked Swim Parties by Jessica Anya Blau is one book that I wish more books were like. A true coming-of-age story, but not in the cheesy way that grown-ups reference books about teenagers. Really and truly made me cringe thinking about what I was like at 14, and thankful my summer was a bit different than Jamie’s.”
Laura — 33 books in
“I’m still reading George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series… seems like perfect summer reading to me!”
Rosalyn — 31 books in
“For pure escapist reading fun this summer, I recommend Petty Magic by Camille DeAngelis. Evelyn Harbinger, a 149 year old ‘cougar’ witch who has the ability to make herself appear like her younger self, a talent that helps in her pursuit of (MUCH) younger men. Then she falls for a man who reminds her of the love of her life, whom she met, then lost, during WWII. With many flashbacks to her missions during the war, a mystery subplot, great world building and well-drawn characters, I didn’t want this book to end!”
Liza – 30 books in
“I recommend Death Cloud – the first in the Young Sherlock Holmes series by Andrew Lane – it is an amazing, nail-biting adventure featuring the famous detective as a young man solving his first mystery!”
Charidy — 27 books in
“I really enjoyed At Home with the Templetons by Monica McInerny (Mac UK). It was read-ably accessible…and I really liked all of the characters (even the unlikable ones). Kind of like hanging out with your family – you love them, but you really don’t sometimes. While it’s kind of a brick to take on vacation, it’s still a quick read overall. Great for the cottage when you want something hefty, but don’t want something Russian ;)”
Shannon — 24 books in
“For me, I love a good chick lit read in the summer, and just polished off three wonderfully fun ‘chick’ books while on vacation. For the summer I’d recommend The Summer of You and Me by Ann Brashares, anything by Emily Giffin, or spending some time the deliciously scandalous Pretty Little Liars series.”
Cory — 23 books in
“My perfect summer read would be Wolf of the Plains.”
Kate — 20 books in
“I adored Tina Fey’s Bossypants. Like spending the day with a hilarious friend you don’t get to see enough–what could be better for summer?”
Meghan – 19 books in
“I think summer is a good time to tackle BIG books, so my recommendation is Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. It’s 950 pages and it’s my current summer read. I’m loving it, even if it is stalling my progress towards 50 books. All you need to do is read the first sentence and you’ll be hooked!”
Now it’s your turn. What book do you recommend reading this summer? And which books are on your summer reading list? We want to know so we can start packing our beach bags! (For days off, of course)
