Blurbs & Bites: April 27th Edition

Blurbs and Bites are back! Here they are, your weekly updates from the book world or just links to things we really like. Siobhan, @chevy27, is running our weekly B&Bs so if you see something you want to share be sure to let her know!

Take it away, Siobhan!

1. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to win 30,000 pounds? Well one of the six authors shortlisted for the Orange Prize will find out on May 30 when the winner is announced. The Short List includes: Halfblood Blues, The Forgotten, Painter of Silence, Foreign Bodies, State of Wonder and The Song of Achilles. To see what the judges have to say about each title click here.

2. Do you love anything that has to do with books? How about videos that are centered on books and reading? Well you are not alone, Larry Ferlazzo has put together some of the best videos about books and reading on his blog, including the Oscar Nominated short film The Fantastic Flying Book of Mr. Morris Lessmore. Check it out here.

3. This past Tuesday, Dear Photograph was released with a lot of buzz. The author, Taylor Jones, has appeared on Canada AM, The Morning show (Global), and the Roz and Mocca show on Kiss 92.5. Dear Photograph began as a website and has skyrocketed into a phenomenon that has now been nominated for a Webby (The Oscars of the Internet)! Vote for it here.

4. In Young Adult and Kids news, two of our books are shortlisted for the 2012 Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Awards. In the category of Children’s Picture Books our very own Frank Viva is nominated for his book Along a Long Road, and in the Young Adult and Middle Grade category, the very talented Kit Pearson is nominated for her Middle Grade novel The Whole Truth.

The winner of each category is selected by a group of students that reside in a Toronto middle school. This year the kids from Parkside Junior and Senior Middle School get the honor of choosing both winners. The winners will be chosen on May 31, 2012! Find out more here.

5. I don’t know about you but I have a serious problem, and that problem is buying books. I haven’t even read them all and yet I will buy three or four at a time. The other issue I am now facing is the lack of space on my bookshelves. Bookshelf Porn is a blog that I discovered one afternoon while on twitter and I have been hooked ever since. It shows you bookshelves from around the world; from the normal, to the outrageous. Take a look at this website that is sure to make you extremely envious.
