Test drive awesome kids books

By Joanna

When I ran out of space on my bookshelves I decided it was time to buy ebooks and limit the time (and money) I spend in actual bookstores. Unfortunately, if I didn’t have a specific book in mind, I tended not to buy books online, as I find online browsing can be frustrating (and significantly less enjoyable than being in a bookstore).  Furthermore, when I’m unsure about whether or not I want to buy a particular book, I tend to go to the store to take an extended peek (okay, to read more than what the free preview shows me!).

This is one of the reasons I’m excited about ebook samplers. They are free (yay!) and give you up to seven chapters of a collection of books to download to your device. Not only do you get to read a whole chunk of the novel at your leisure, you also get recommendations of what to read if you like one of the books in the sampler. It’s so nice to have a reminder of which books you are looking to buy next! I’ve put together a list of my favorite books from these brand new HarperCollinsCanada kid and teen samplers. The samplers are available now, so download them and let me know what your favourite titles are!

The Serpent’s Egg by J. Fitzgerald McCurdy

This was one of my favourite books as a kid! Set in Ottawa, Miranda goes from dealing with a terrible teacher at school to being responsible to save both our world and a parallel one where elves, dwarfs and dragons exist. The journey tests Miranda’s courage, loyalty and magical abilities. Once I finished it, I had to start its sequel The Burning Crown right away!

The Serpent’s Egg and other great titles are included in the Fantasy Adventures for Kids: Dragons and Mermaids Sampler, available on: Kobo, Kindle, Apple, Sony, and Google.

The Whole Truth by Kit Pearson

Focusing on 10-year-old Polly and her sister Maud as they travel from Winnipeg to live with their grandmother in Victoria, The Whole Truth is a coming-of-age story that deals with family loyalty. The girls have a very big secret, and they don’t know how long it will stay that way. Like everything else by Kit Pearson, The Whole Truth is not to be missed! There were so many great books in this sampler I couldn’t choose just one favourite!

The Whole Truth is included in the Friendship Stories for Kids: The Girl or Boy Next Door Sampler available on: Kobo, Kindle, Apple, Sony, and Google.

Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel

Whenever there is a new book available by Kenneth Oppel I need to read it. I love all of his books, but Half Brother became one of my favourites! When Ben Tomlin’s family gets a chimpanzee to raise as a human for an scientific experiment, he doesn’t know how to react. But when the project’s funding is cancelled and they have to let Zan go, Ben is distraught and will do anything to keep his little brother safe. Half Brother is an amazing book; it is inspirational for both children and adults.

Check out Half Brother and other stories in the Friendship Stories for Kids: The Girl or Boy Next Door Sampler. Available on: Kobo, Kindle, Apple, Sony, and Google.

Why We Broke Up by Daniel Handler

When I found out Daniel Handler was Lemony Snicket, I was sold. Why We Broke Up tells the story of Min Green and Ed Slaterton’s breakup through items that Min collected during their relationship. This is a very unique book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I’ve recommended it to all of my friends.

Why We Broke Up and five other stories are featured in the Page-Turners for Teens: Secrets and Lies Sampler, available on: Kobo, Kindle, Apple, Sony, and Google.

This Dark Endeavour by Kenneth Oppel

A combination of Kenneth Oppel and Frankenstein… of course I had to read it! This Dark Endeavour, and its sequel Such Wicked Intent, tells the story of the mad scientist Frankenstein as a teenager. Filled with adventure, romance and jealousy, Victor Frankenstein is determined to make the Elixir of Life in order to save his twin brother Konrad.

Give This Dark Endeavour and other stories a try in the Revamped Classics for Teens: From Austen to Shelley Sampler. Available on: Kobo, Kindle, Apple, Sony, and Google.

Happy Reading!
