Born of Illusion is a delightful mix of some of my favourite things: New York City, the 1920s, ghosts, mystery and magic. In other words, the perfect summer read. Anna is a savvy heroine chock full of street-smarts who also has an uncanny ability to sense people’s thoughts and feelings. For better or for worse, she is devoted to her wayward mother, who masquerades as a medium. Anna and her mother have a very complicated and frustrating relationship, which adds a shade of realism to this otherwise fantastical story.
There are lots of wonderful details about life in the 1920s, including the parties, fascination with the spiritualism moments, and of course, the fashion. Throw in a bit of romance and what more do you want in a summer read?
