Ten Reasons We Love Lemony Snicket

In preparation for the release of When Did You See Her Last?, the second book in Lemony Snicket’s All The Wrong Questions series, we’ve compiled a list of the reasons we love the mysterious author.

1. We grew up reading A Series of Unfortunate Events—these books turned us into the readers we are today.

2. Not to mention the dedications in A Series of Unfortunate Events to Beatrice, which are incredibly sad, but also pretty amazing:

For Beatrice – When we met my life began, Soon afterwards, yours ended.
The Ersatz Elevator

For Beatrice – Summer without you is cold as winter. Winter without you is even colder.
The Hostile Hospital

For Beatrice – When we first met, you were pretty, and I was lonely. Now I am pretty lonely.
The Slippery Slope

3. Actually, we love him become he’s a very darkly romantic individual. The The Beatrice Letters confirmed this.

4. He wrote The Dark, a beautiful picture book — with art by Jon Klassen — that offers a fresh take on an age-old fear.  (You can view the book trailer here).

5. Why We Broke Up, written by Daniel Handler, Lemony Snicket’s official representative, is one of the best (and most unique) depictions of first love — and first heartbreak — we’ve read in a very long time.

6. He wrote this post in reaction to Occupy Wall Street and it’s still one of the best responses we’ve seen to the movement.

Someone feeling wronged is like someone feeling thirsty. Don’t tell them they aren’t. Sit with them and have a drink.

7. To stay inconspicuous, Mr. Snicket had Jude Law (Jude Law!) play him in the movie adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events.

8. His collection of advice entitled Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can’t Avoid is filled with some of the most wonderful quotes.

9. …And has one of the best description of loss, which has been helpful during troubling times. What else can you ask for from an author?

“It is a curious thing, the death of a loved one. We all know that our time in this world is limited, and that eventually all of us will end up underneath some sheet, never to wake up. And yet it is always a surprise when it happens to someone we know. It is like walking up the stairs to your bedroom in the dark, and thinking there is one more stair than there is. Your foot falls down, through the air, and there is a sickly moment of dark surprise as you try and readjust the way you thought of things.”

10. On a happier note, Lemony Snicket is simply awesome. Whether you’ve met him personally, seen one of his talks at a school or library, or know him exclusively though his books, you can’t deny he is a hilarious and charming individual.
