The Daniel Plan Day #9: Tips for Success

I initially agreed to this detox because I wanted to support my colleagues and be a team player, but what I didn’t anticipate was how much perspective I’d gain on how I’d been treating my body. As I mentioned in my previous post, the start of this detox was a massive shock to my system. I experienced severe headaches from caffeine withdrawal and constantly felt hungry because I hadn’t thought ahead to prepare anything I could eat at work.

Although I managed to complete the detox and appreciate many new health benefits, if I were to do it all over again, I would definitely do things differently. Here are some tips to get your detox off to a better start than mine:

Before you begin . . .

1)    If you think you might be dependent on caffeine to get you through the day, it’s a good idea to start cutting back early. Switch from coffee to tea. Or, if you really need that coffee in the morning (like me), then slowly start to cut back on the amount you are consuming. Do you typically drink a large coffee in the morning? Why not try ordering a medium, and then, once you’ve adjusted to that, cut back to a small. Believe me: this is the thing I wish I’d done the most.

2)    Adjust the size of your portions. For me, if food is in front of me, I’ll eat it. As I typically bombarded my stomach with gluten filled goods (pre-detox), I found it difficult to adjust to eating lighter and smaller quantities of food. If I’d been used to smaller portions before starting the detox, I would have felt a lot less hungry.

During the detox . . .

1)    Plan ahead. What I hadn’t realized before starting the detox was how much work goes into preparing your daily meals. The Daniel Plan provides lots of delicious options to support you through your detox, and I’d suggest making one of the tasty meals at night and then taking it to work with you the next day. I forgot to do this a few times and had a very difficult time finding the right things to eat.

2)    Surround yourself with supportive people. If you can get a friend to do The Daniel Plan detox with you, I promise it will be much easier. The hardest part of my day was going home to my family who were very much not following the detox plan. So try to surround yourself with people who are following the detox with you. It’ll keep you motivated and ultimately be much better for your soul!
