15 Reasons Why We Love Amy Poehler

We’re sharing 15 Reasons Why We Love Amy Poehler in honour of Yes Please hitting bookshelves today!*

*This list was much longer, but in an effort to not make you read an hour-long post when you’re supposed to be working/studying, we’ve condensed it. So, you’re welcome?

1. Every single episode of Parks and Recreation.

I’m just going to go ahead and declare Leslie Knope as the Greatest Character In Television History. Cool? Cool.

2. “I don’t f*cking care if you like it.”

Tina Fey’s memoir, Bossypants, is fantastic for dozens of reasons, including this badass moment she describes from the SNL writers’ room: After Amy made an “unladylike” joke, Jimmy Fallon replied in faux-squeamish voice, “Stop that! It’s not cute! I don’t like it!” Amy’s response? “I don’t f*cking care if you like it.” This quote has (rightly) become so popular that it’s found its way onto t-shirts and cross stitch patterns (um, yes please), and encourages us, in Tina’s words, to “Do your thing and don’t care if they like it.”

3. Mean Girls

Amy’s role as Regina George’s mom is one of the best parts of Mean Girls and, even though it’s been 10 (!!!) years, I can still rewatch and quote her scenes over and over and over again.

4. She’s a feminist

“Yes, I consider myself a feminist, and it informs my work only in that it’s just who I am, in the same way that I’m a woman, or I’m 5’2″ or whatever. I was lucky that I came through a system that had many people who did much more hard work and road-clearing before I got there.”

5. “There’s power in looking silly and not caring that you do.”

This is one of my favourite Amy quotes. Life’s stressful enough as it is without constantly worrying about what people think of you. Instead, have fun. Let loose. Ignore the stares.

6. Amy’s Hillary Clinton impression

Tina Fey and Amy together is always gold, but when they appeared together in the 2008 SNL season opener, with Tina playing Sarah Palin and Amy as Hillary Clinton, they gave us one of the greatest moments in the show’s history.

7. Ask Amy

Amy answers viewer questions submitted on the Smart Girls YouTube channel on topics such as friendship, apologizing, and letting go. The advice she offers is intelligent, touching and useful for all ages.

My favourite piece of advice: “If someone asks you why you’re crying, you just say, “Because of how wrong you are.”

8. Co-hosting the Golden Globes With Tina Fey

Amy and Tina co-hosting the Globes for the past two years is pretty much the best thing to happen to the awards show. For proof, watch their 2013 opening monologue here.

9. Amy’s Friendship with Tina Fey

ELLE's 21st Annual Women In Hollywood Celebration - Roaming Inside

Oh, hey, it’s the fourth time we’ve mentioned Tina Fey! These two have been friends for over twenty years and have blessed the world with countless hilarious moments (see numbers 2, 6, and 8), including this gem:

Also, super-important to note that when these two were on “Weekend Update” together, it was the first time two women co-anchored the segment. Yay for awesome ladies being awesome together!

10. “Lamey Poehler”

For Amy Poehler fans, October 13th holds a special place in our hearts:

Dear Diary, mark it down. October 13th, 1986 is officially the worst day of my life. Everything sucks. Everything is wicked bad and it sucks. School is a nightmare. Today, I got my period on the balance beam and nobody told me and everybody saw. Now, everyone’s calling me ‘Lamey Poehler’. And then my mom found my beer in the laundry hamper and she had a wicked hissy fit so now she’s not letting me go to see Bon Jovi with opening act cinderella! Now my dream of Jon Bon Jovi seeing me in the crowd and taking me away from this miserable life is ruined! I hate my life! I gotta get my hair higher! (SNL: Season 33, Episode 3)

11. Broad City

Amy is one of Broad City’s executive producer and also directed and guest starred in this year’s season finale. The hilarious show follows two twenty-something best friends living in NYC and has one of the best friendships currently on television. Seriously. Watch this show.

12. “You don’t have to laugh”

During Glamour’s 2009 Women of the Year Awards, Amy shared this super-great piece of advice for young girls (which I then printed and framed in my room and now point to whenever a younger cousin comes over, because, yup, this is good advice):

13. Amy’s Sarah Palin rap

Providing us again with one of the funniest SNL moments in recent years, Amy was nine-months pregnant when she performed her legendary Sarah Palin rap (while the VP candidate was on screen). Best line? “From my porch I can see / Russia and such.”

14. Amy’s response to an interviewer’s comments on the challenges faced by men.

“We have to deal with those juxtapositions every day, but I’m glad you’re finally experiencing it as a white male.”

Watch the whole clip here.

15. Her idea of the perfect exercise class truly is perfect.

In Ladies Home Journal, Amy describes the perfect exercise class as this: The teacher gives us all a hug and goes, “You did it! You showed up! Let’s lie down.” We all lie down and she’s like, “How is everybody feeling?” We’re like, “Great!” And the teacher’s like, “Great!” Then we all get to leave 20 minutes early.

So, what are your favourite Amy Poehler moments? Are you going to binge-read Yes Please today? At what point do you have to stop and say to yourself, “You’ve watched too many Parks and Rec episodes in a row, please go to sleep”? Let us know at @SavvyReader!
