Review: Single, Carefree, Mellow by Katherine Heiny

Single Carefree Mellow tpbk.inddKatherine Heiny’s short story collection Single, Carefree, Mellow arrived at my desk one day after an endorsement from Lena Dunham made a coworker think of me. She was right to pass it along. I enjoyed this collection more than any I’ve read before (and I’m a huge fan of short stories) because I felt like, for the first time, it was a collection written for me.

Infidelity is a theme that is woven all throughout the book as it explores women in all walks of life and in all walks of love. (Is love a walk? I find it more of a stumble, trip or full out faceplant, but I digress.) Though the characters in these stories have not fully mastered relationships, the author, Katherine Heiny, has certainly mastered writing about them. Each chapter features special and very real examples of partnership: between a young woman and her dog (and later her unborn baby); her boss, who is also her lover; her husband; her step-daughter; her neighbour; her friends. In fact, the first story features a pair of friends that reminded me in a surreal way of my two best friends.

(…These are them, they are wonderful):

The women in this collection are not perfect. They are also, in no way, single, carefree or mellow. Instead they are flawed, familiar and funny. And since today is February 13th, a day that Amy Poehler and Parks and Recreation have coined as Galentine’s Day, we thought there’s no better time to celebrate lovely, real, and imperfect women–those in Single, Carefree, Mellow, and those in real life–than today with a fun giveaway! Click here to enter win two copies of Single, Carefree, Mellow: one for you (because you’re great!) and a one to share with a friend (because we bet she’s pretty great too).

Of course, thank you to all the authors and bloggers who have joined our celebration by sharing their thoughtful reviews of Single, Carefree, Mellow. If you’d like to check them out, the links are below.

” This book arrived only a few days ago and I flew through it. It’s a perfect weekend read that’s at times juicy, naughty, sad and funny.” —Michele, Just A Little Lost

“Katherine Heiny underlines in bold black permanent marker the fear, beauty, and excitement that all relationships are made of. Single, Carefree, Mellow would make the perfect Galentine’s gift for the lady in your life.” —Vanessa, My Pen, My Voice

“Katherine Heiny’s work does something magical: elevates the mundane so that it has the stakes of a mystery novel, gives women’s interior lives the gravity they so richly deserve–and makes you laugh along the way.” —Lena Dunham, author of Not That Kind of Girl

“Katherine Heiny’s smart and stylishly-written stories are a delight. The women who populate this book […] are wonderfully human and relatable.” —Adelle Waldman, author of The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P

Single, Carefree, Mellow is a book about heartache, adultery, love, and loss that somehow manages to be both laugh-out-loud funny and wise, sometimes in the very same sentence. It’s full of lines so smart and sharp that I was compelled to stop and read them out loud to my friends. This book is amazing, brilliant, and nothing short of wonderful.” —Jennifer Close, author of Girls in White Dresses and The Smart One

Single, Carefree, Mellow is among the most insightful, funny, and smart collections
I’ve read in a very long time.” —Stephen McCauley, author of The Object of My Affection and Insignificant Others
