Top 10 Upcoming Novels to Bookmark This Fall

Summer is coming to a close, and while I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to the glorious heat, I’m extremely excited to talk about these new fall books! From literary hard-hitters to inspiring teen reads, there’s a great mix of fiction to look forward to. So get your PSLs and TBRs ready, you won’t want to miss these delightful upcoming titles!

The Illegal by Lawrence Hill

It’s been 8 years since The Book of Negroes, but Lawrence Hill is finally back this year with his highly anticipated new novel The Illegal. It’s about Keita Ali, a young boy from Zantoroland who runs to help support his family – that is, until the stakes are raised and he must run to save his family after they are targeted for his father’s outspoken political views. When Keita fails to place among the top finishers in his first race, he runs away to Freedom State. But Freedom State is not what its name suggests; Keita can only stay safe – and escape execution – if he keeps moving. Trust me, this is going to be a book to watch this fall. On sale September 8.

The Golden Son by Shilpi Somaya Gowda

Shilpi Somaya Gowda‘s bestselling novel Secret Daughter was a powerful and poignant novel about motherhood, loss, and identity that captured our hearts, and her newest book, The Golden Son, is set to do it again. Anil is the first person in his family to leave India, attend college, and become a doctor. His new life in America is full of exciting firsts: first alcoholic drink, first love – but when Anil makes a devastating medical mistake, he starts to question his worth as a doctor and as a friend. Will reuniting with his childhood best friend in India give him the clarity he needs? On sale October 20.

The Tears of Dark Water by Corban Addison

Ahoy! This fast-paced thriller by Corban Addison is sure to get you through the back-to-school slump. Centered around a Somalian pirate that is captured and extradited to stand trial in the United States, The Tears of Dark Water unravels the secrets its main characters are willing to keep in order to protect the ones they love. O, The Oprah Magazine calls it “a pulse-revving novel with a serious message.” Fans of mysteries and thrillers: you won’t want to miss this one! On sale September 15.

This is Your Life, Harriet Chance! by Jonathan Evison

Described as a “coming-of-old-age” novel, this newest book from New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Evison is a big-hearted story about an elderly woman looking back on her life. It follows Harriet Chance, who is not a particularly adventurous woman, as she sets off on an Alaskan cruise planned by her late husband before his death. While on the cruise, she comes face-to-face with her estranged daughter, forcing her to confront the truth about her past and learn what it really means to begin again. On sale September 8.

The Clasp by Sloane Crosley

What happens when three friends set off on a madcap adventure to find a valuable necklace that disappeared years ago during the Nazi occupation of France? Sloane Crosley‘s The Clasp is a novel that is part comedy of manners, part treasure hunt, and 100% charming. Don’t believe us? See what Amanda Seyfried has to say in the book trailer. On sale October 6.

The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto by Mitch Albom

Here’s a novel that will tug on your heartstrings! Beloved author Mitch Albom delves into his love of music in The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto, a book about the greatest guitarist to ever walk the earth and the six lives he changed with his magical blue strings. Narrated by the voice of Music, this upcoming book is a classic in the making. On sale November 10.

After Alice by Gregory Maguire

If you loved Gregory Maguire‘s Wicked, you’ll love his magical new twist on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland! Ada, Alice’s friend, goes on a journey to find Alice after she’s mysteriously disappeared. What will happen when she falls down the rabbit-hole herself? Can she find Alice and bring her back to real life? As a fan of re-imagined tales, I can’t wait for you to read this book! On sale October 27.

Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy

This new novel by Julie Murphy (author of Side Effects May Vary) is probably my most anticipated teen read this fall! Dubbed “Dumplin'” by her former beauty queen mom, Willowdean has always been comfortable in her own skin. But things change when she develops a crush on Private School Bo. Instead of feeling more self-assured, she starts to doubt herself. In order to regain her confidence, Will decides to put herself out there in a big way: by entering the Miss Teen Blue Bonnet Pageant. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City – and maybe herself most of all. On sale September 15.

The Nest by Kenneth Oppel

In this illustrated horror story by Kenneth Oppel, a boy befriends a group of angels that have him convinced that they’ve come to save his sick baby brother. Little does he know the angels have a completely different plan in mind. Layer by layer, the boy must unravel the truth about his new friends before it’s too late. With evocative and disquieting illustrations by award-winning artist Jon Klassen, The Nest is an unforgettable journey into one boy’s deepest insecurities and darkest fears. On sale September 29.

The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness

What if you aren’t the Chosen One? In YA superstar Patrick Ness’ new novel, the main characters are just trying to graduate high school before the school gets blown up again while their peers, the “indie kids,” are off fighting zombies and monsters. This inventive new novel is a story about normal people living in extraordinary circumstances and reminds us that we all deserve to be the star of our own stories. On sale October 6.
