Bookmarks (Frenzy Edition!): September 18th

Hi Savvy Readers! We hope you’ve been having a great week so far! It’s been another exciting week in publishing — specifically for YA and teen readers, so we asked HCC Frenzy to share the five biggest, most-YA-bookish news from the past week. Take it away, Suman!

1. If You Got It, Flaunt It: If you’ve been following Frenzy online, you’ve probably heard us talk about Julie Murphy’s new novel Dumplin about a million times. This is not an exaggeration. Why are we so obsessed with this book? Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (or, “Dumplin’”) is one of our favourite heroines ever, and we promise that she’ll steal your heart. She’s not perfect, but she is strong, witty, complicated, vulnerable, and real.

Also! This book is for literally everyone:

We can’t wait for y’all to read it and fall in love with Willowdean just as much as we did.

2. We got our first glimpse of the highly anticipated Allegiant movie this week!

We were all such huge fans of Veronica Roth‘s Divergent series, and loved seeing Insurgent on the big screen earlier this year. Needless to say, we’re very excited to see how Allegiant will be adapted on screen! March 18th cannot come soon enough.

3. Obsessed with Red Queen? Are you counting down the days until Glass Sword is on sale? (143 days left!) Well then, here’s some pretty great news for you: Victoria Aveyard has signed a new two-book deal with HarperCollins!

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week, Victoria is writing a 4th Red Queen novel that will be released in 2018 (!!) after Glass Sword in February 2016 and Book Three in 2017. The second book in this super-exciting deal is a new novel that will go on sale in 2019.

4. The longlists for this year’s National Book Awards were announced this week. The Young People’s Literature category features five of our favourite books of the year:

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson
Bone Gap by Laura Ruby
Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman
Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

Congratulations, everyone!

5. Also announced this week: Zoey Deutch will star in the film adaptation of Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver! We’ve been wishing for a Before I Fall movie for so long and can’t wait to see Zoey play Samantha Kingston. If you haven’t read Before I Fall  yet, READ IT. You won’t regret it. We promise.

It’s been a great week for YA and we have a feeling that the rest of the year is going to be just as awesome!
