What We’re Reading This Month: February 2016

Hello, Savvy Readers!

We can’t believe we’re already one month down in the 2016 50 Book Pledge and approaching 10% of our community goal of 150,000 books! For your own TBR curiosity, we’ve shared what we’re reading this month: from a middle-grade book that is perfect for readers of all ages, to cozy a British whodunnit mystery; to highly anticipated sequel. Which one are you excited for?

Taylor is reading The Trouble With Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon

I picked up The Trouble with Goats and Sheep for the cover but I’m hooked by the lush description, hilarious dialogue, and effortless friendship between Grace and Tilley. I haven’t seen young characters with this much precociousness since Siddalee from Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood stole my heart. I can’t wait to get deeper into the mystery of what happened to Mrs Creasey…

Emma is reading Be Frank With Me by Julia Claiborne Johnson

I’m reading Be Frank With Me by Julia Claiborne Johnson, a charming and heartfelt story about a reclusive writer, M.M. Banning, and her eccentric nine year old son Frank, who dresses like a 1950’s movie star, rattles off facts and watches old Hollywood films all day. When twenty-five year old Alice is sent from New York to Los Angeles to help out while Banning finally writes her second novel, Alice finds herself pulled into their world. Find out how you can earn a 50 Book Pledge badge for this one!

Karen is reading Pax by Sara Pennypacker and Jon Klassen

Pax is one of the most heart-warming stories I’ve read in a while. When Peter is forced to set his pet fox Pax free into the wild, he quickly realizes that it was a mistake. He spends the rest of the novel making his way back to him; meanwhile, Pax is having adventures of his own. With beautiful illustrations by Jon Klassen, this story about best friends is one you won’t want to put down until you’re done. (Ps. The book trailer for this is stunning!)

Suman is reading Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

I’m reading Glass Sword, the second book in Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen series! Glass Sword picks up right where the last book left off as we follow Mare Barrow on her mission to defeat Norta’s new king: Maven (that traitor!!!!)

Shannon is reading Girl Through Glass by Sari Wilson

A coming of age story, set in New York City, about a ballerina? SIGN ME UP. Girl Through Glass by Sari Wilson sounds like Centre Stage meets Black Swan meets She’s Come Undone and I just can’t wait to dive in.

Kate is reading A Girl’s Best Friend by Lindsey Kelk

A Girl’s Best Friend by Lindsey Kelk is a perfect ending to the wonderful About a Girl series. It made me laugh out loud so much that I couldn’t read it in public and is so relatable that it is a bit worrisome. I’d recommend reading the About a Girl series if you feel spending your Valentine’s Day laughing and falling in love with some unforgettably charming characters.
