If You Liked The Heart Goes Last, Then Try…

If you liked Margaret Atwood’s The Heart Goes Last, then try The Possessions by Sara Flannery Murphy. Here’s why…

A little odd, a little dystopian and highly entertaining is what we’d use to describe both these great novels. The Heart Goes Last centers around Charmaine and Stan as they enter into the Positron Project, ‘a social experiment’ where half the time they live in comfort and half the time they live in prison. The two become obsessed with their ‘alternates,’ the people who occupy their lives when they’re in prison. Which is why we’ve compared it to The Possessions, as the main character also falls into a powerful organization with a secret agenda. Eurydice works for the Elyssian Society. She takes pills to host the dead relatives of the living so that they can communicate. Through her work, she becomes attached to one of her clients and his dead wife, and starts to live a double life. An absorbing page turner that leads you to the shattering, unforgettable conclusion.

These two novels play with the idea of obsession, secrets, powerful organizations, and love. So if you liked The Heart Goes Last, pick up The Possessions and tell us what you think in the comments below or on Twitter @SavvyReader.
