If You Liked Welcome to Night Vale, Then Try…

If you like Welcome to Night Vale by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, then try Borne by Jeff VanderMeer. Here’s why…

Get ready, it’s about to get weird! But chances are, if you’re a fan of the hit podcast Welcome to Night Vale and its bestselling novel counterpart, you’re already prepared for that.

If there’s a special place in your heart for that strange little desert town and all its unlikely inhabitants, you might enjoy a visit to Jeff VanderMeer’s city, a dystopian wasteland under the paw of a despotic giant flying bear. It’s a city where scavengers looking for biotech to salvage may find a strange, glowing green thing—not distinguishably plant or animal—tangled in the bear’s fur. At least that’s what happens to Rachel.

As with Night Vale, Borne asks what it means to be a person in a dangerous, ever-changing world. And in Rachel’s case, whether taking in, bonding with – and finding humanity in – an intelligent, growing and shapeshifting something is too much to risk. A little bleak, a little creepy, but ultimately beautiful, if you like Welcome to Night Vale, Borne is the kind of high concept sci-fi we know you’ll love.
