Avery Graham has worked hard to create the perfect life. She is the chief of staff to Peter Haines, the charismatic mayor of Toronto. She and her long-time boyfriend Matt are happy and content. And she has a loving circle of friends and family. Yet when something goes wrong at work, Avery’s entire life begins to unravel.

Avery has been working tirelessly with Peter on the revolutionary new waterfront development project.  She’s put aside her decades-old feelings for Peter and he’s gone from her cottage crush to work husband. Everything is going to plan until Roger Wozniak, a major political player and major bully, threatens to ruin the entire project.

And it’s not just work that is causing Avery stress. When Matt proposes, Avery can’t help but dwell in the past. She’s never forgiven herself for her failed marriage with literature professor Hugh Crane. Although Avery and Matt have been together for 14 years, Avery is still unable to move forward into the future.

Going back and forth between present and past, Just Like Family offers a glimpse into the defining years of Avery’s life as she grows up and becomes the woman she is today.

It’s impossible to put this book down, as Avery struggles to put out the fires disrupting her work life and personal life. With the perfect mix of thrilling and emotionally compelling, the plot is immersing.

I loved the characters in the book, especially Avery. She is a strong modern woman, but she is also flawed and reflective. Every reader can relate to her struggles with work–life balance. I also loved the familiar Toronto and cottage country settings of the book. Just Like Family is highly entertaining and it’s the perfect book to kick off your summer!
