50 Book Pledge Featured Read: The Alice Network

Hi Savvy Readers! I have yet another perfect book to recommend to you: The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. Have you heard about it yet? Because everybody is talking about it! Reese Witherspoon even announced that it’s the latest @RWBookClub pick.

Filled with espionage, strong female characters, and the backdrop of war-torn France, The Alice Network is an immersive and fun read that you don’t want to miss.

The book opens up in 1947, with American socialite Charlotte “Charlie” St. Clair travelling to Switzerland with her mother for an “appointment”. Charlie is pregnant and unmarried, and her parents agree that the quicker the problem is dealt with, the better. Yet Charlie can think of only one thing: finding her French cousin Rose, who disappeared during World War II. Slipping away from her mother in England, Charlie travels to London to enlist the help of Eve Gardiner, a mysterious, alcoholic shut-in.

Years before, in 1915, Eve finds herself thrust into a secret network of female spies working for the Allies. Fluent in English, French and German, Eve is sent to work in a café in Lille, France, to eavesdrop on German officers. She is trained by the mesmerizing Lili, who manages a vast network of secret agents who risk their lives to pass information between borders.

Now, the women pair up to find the truth, no matter where it takes them.

The book alternates between 1915 and 1947, and the two timelines are equally enthralling. Quinn does a fantastic job at maintaining suspense and reminding the reader that the spies can be caught at any moment. You’ll be on the edge of your seat as Eve and Lili show off their secret agent skills, hiding coded messages in hairpins, and slipping through guarded borders.

This beautiful historical fiction novel is fast-paced, thrilling, and entertaining. It highlights the relationships and bonds created during the war and the lengths people will go to find the truth. WARNING: I picked this book up and did not put it down until I finished it. It’s that good. I cannot recommend The Alice Network enough!
