Gift Guide: DIY Bookish Gifts

Happy Wednesday, Savvy Readers! Time for another Savvy Gift Guide! This time we’re giving you some great DIY ideas (AND tutorials!) for the crafty gifter and/or the gifter on a budget.

We promise these DIY gifts are actually realistic to make in the short amount of time we have left before the holidays (unlike some unrealistic DIY projects). Some of our very own Savvy Readers made these themselves, so we can definitely say they are tried and true!

Scarf 1 Pattern | Scarf 2 Pattern

‘Tis the season of below zero weather, which means ‘tis the season of scarves! If you’re a knitter/crocheter give the gift of a bookish scarf, like the Harry Potter ones above. Bonus: there’s a pattern for the old-school Fantastic Beasts era Hogwarts scarf, and a pattern for the more recent thin-striped scarf.

The reader you know will love receiving a handmade bookmark. The possibilities are endless with this one. Check out the tutorials we found – the colouring page bookmarks can even act as a double gift if you add some pencil crayons and invite your reader to colour it themselves!

Embroidery Pattern

Perhaps a little outside of some people’s skillset, but you can’t go wrong with needlepoint. You can find so may patterns online (like this one)! You can hoop it to act as a wall hanging, or get ambitious and turn your design into a totebag!

#LifeHack: why buy a graphic tee if you can make it yourself?? I love doing this. Simply buy a plain t-shirt (any colour, any size, and shape!) and head to your local craft store for fabric paint or iron on letters and voila! You’re a fashion designer. You can take a quote or phrase you love, or turn an ordinary phrase into a bookish one. For example, we love the idea of changing “good vibes only” to “good books only.”

WARNING: The remaining DIY ideas involve defacing books… but we think they can be a great way to make use of an old book (or textbook) you’re never going to read again! Or if you really can’t bear the thought of damaging a book, you could sub in newspaper pages for the same effect!

Ok, you’ve been warned.

Book Bouquet

Book Bouquet Tutorial

Who says bouquets are just for weddings? These paper flower bouquets are so simple and so gorgeous! Any reader would love to have these beauties on display.

Book Folding

Another gorgeous DIY for display! You can personalize this gift to suit the reader you know. Words, pictures, anything you can think of. Fun fact: our very own Savvy Reader, Danielle, made this beautiful Christmas-y book display for us! Check out her Instagram.

Book Coasters Tutorial

What’s a book without a nice hot beverage? Well, still a book, but not nearly as cozy! We’re firm believers in pairing books and drinks so what better way to accommodate that than a DIY’d bookish coaster? There are so many ways to do this, but we love the tutorial our very own Savvy Reader Joanna has put together (while she was making these very coasters – how cool!!). Check out the tutorial here.

Blackout Poetry

This one also has endless possibilities! You can go simple or get creative, but no matter how you do it you’ve just turned an old book page into a piece of art. The message/poem is completely up to you, so you can tailor it to your reader. Bonus: throw it in a frame and you’ve got some beautiful new wall art.
