Blood is Money, Time is Power, and Desire is Treachery. Welcome to Everless.
Everless by Sara Holland is one of the most unique YA fantasies to hit the shelves in a long time. In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency—extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries.
No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until a fateful accident forced them to flee in the dead of night. When Jules discovers that her father is dying, she knows that she must return to Everless to earn more time for him before she loses him forever.
But going back to Everless brings more danger—and temptation—than Jules could have ever imagined. She’s caught in a tangle of violent secrets and finds her heart torn between two people she thought she’d never see again. Her decisions have the power to change her fate—and the fate of time itself.
The concept is simple yet so unique. Time is drawn from blood, and the blood is then turned in to blood-iron coins to be consumed in order to gain more time. The rich live for decades, and the poor fade away once their time runs out….
The thing that really drew me in was the incredible world building. From the first page Sara does an amazing job of setting up the world in which these characters live, but she does so in a way that doesn’t feel like info dumping. Fair warning: this book is a serious page-turner. Like, you will be neglecting your daily responsibilities to read just one more chapter to find out where the story will take you.
I highly recommend Everless for fans of YA and even adult fantasy. As someone who really enjoys this genre, I can easily say that this is one of the better ones I have read in quite a while. I can’t wait for the sequel to this duology, and to find out how everything wraps up!
