Happy (holiday—if you’re in Ontario) Monday, Savvy Readers!

We’re guessing that you’ve spent most of this weekend reading, and you’re probably in need of a new book recommendation. Am I right? Well, enter our newest featured read: How to Stop Time by Matt Haig. If you haven’t already picked this one up, now is the time to do so! You won’t regret it.

The story follows Tom Hazard, a man with a rare condition that slows down his aging process, thus allowing him to live for centuries longer than the average human. So while he may sound mid-forties, he is actually over 400 years old! I know, WHAT?!

When he’s young, Tom falls in love with Rose, and together they have a daughter. However, with the more time that passes, the more people start to notice and fear his lack of aging. (He was, after all, living in the time of the witch hunts). In order to protect his family, Tom must flee, leaving his family forever.

From there, Tom moves through the centuries, constantly reinventing himself to avoid detection. Eventually, he stumbles upon the Albatross Society: a group of people just like him! In joining, he is offered protection in exchange for helping to recruit new members once every 8 years.

The most import rule in Tom’s new life? Don’t fall in love. Easier said than done. When Tom starts to fall for his present-day coworker, Camille, he is caught between the Society, his guilt for his abandoned love, and his current happiness. Will Tom ever be able to accept the loss of his beloved Rose and make peace with the present? You’ll have to read to find out!

How to Stop Time is a love story—400 years in the making. Matt Haig does a great job of keeping the reader’s attention through all 400 years of Tom’s life. I love the slow glimpses of all of Tom’s amazing experiences! I mean, cocktails with Fitzgerald and Zelda? A dream! At the same time, my heart couldn’t help but break for the hardships he’s had. This read will have you on a roller coaster through time, and it’s definitely worth the ride.
