TGIF, Savvy Readers! Friday might be my favourite day of the week: it’s the beginning of the weekend, plus, we always have such a fun time recapping the week’s news here at Bookmarks! Well this week is no different. Keep reading to see what fun things happened in the book world this week!

1. **Breaking News** HCC March Madness Starts Today!

2. Meet Baghdad’s First Female Bookstore Owner and Publisher

We’re starting this week’s recap with groundbreaking news! NBC profiled Bara’a Abdul Hadi Mudher al-Biyati, Baghdad’s first female bookstore owner and publisher. Not only that, she’s also inspiring young women after her to achieve their dreams. Read more about al-Biyati here.

3. Patton Oswalt on Completing His Late Wife’s True Crime Book

Michelle McNamara, a true crime enthusiast and writer, sadly passed away before she could complete her book I’ll Be Gone in the Dark. Her husband, comedian and actor Patton Oswalt, was determined to finish it. This week, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark was officially published. Entertainment Weekly talked to Oswalt about the process of putting the book together and Michelle’s years of hard work researching. Click here to read all about it.

4. Dolly Parton Donates Her 100 Millionth Book

What a great accomplishment! Through her initiative, Imagination Library, Dolly Parton has officially donated 100 million books to young readers. The initiative has been running since 1996, when Dolly set it up in honour of her father who never had a chance to learn to read and write. Read more about the initiative and Dolly’s donations here.

5. Film Rights Sold for Alafair Burke’s The Wife

Heads up, psychological thriller fans: Alafair Burke‘s newest thriller, The Wife, will soon be adapted for the screen by Amazon Studios! Deadline reported the news this week, calling The Wife “a thriller in the #MeToo movement.” Intrigued? Learn more about the book here and the rights deal here.

6. On The Come Up Giveaway!!!

Angie Thomas has had a busy week! Not only did she receive the key to Jackson, she also celebrated the one year anniversary of publishing her critically acclaimed and beloved novel The Hate U Give.
