50 Book Pledge Featured Read: Educated

Hey, Savvy Readers!

Lately we’ve been giving you a lot of fiction titles as featured reads, but this week we decided to switch things up with the FASCINATING memoir by Tara Westover that everyone’s been talking about—Educated.

Westover grew up in a rural area of Idaho, and unlike most kids her age, did not attend school. Instead, her and her siblings stayed home with their family and either worked in the junkyard with their father or learned holistic medical skills from their mother, all in preparation for the impending apocalypse.

You see, Westover‘s family were survivalists and did not believe in government, schools, doctors, etc. So when her brother severely burned his leg, they did not see a doctor. When her mother suffered brain damage in a car accident, they did not go to a hospital. And when the children expressed interest in school, they were ignored. Can you even imagine?

But throughout her life, Westover dreamed of life outside her family’s confines. So in the little bit of free time she had, she studied the few books in her house and with the help of her older brother, eventually gained acceptance to a university, which, given her lack of formal education, was a feat in itself.

Finally, away from the strict beliefs of her family, Westover was able to explore the world around her. But every summer and holiday, she returned to her family home where she once more became torn between her familial ties and her natural aptitude for learning.

Educated is a journey of self-discovery, family strains, and personal growth that will have you captivated from beginning to end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is one of those read-it-to-believe-it stories.  It is amazing to hear that in the 90s and early 2000s, people we living this way! I honestly had no idea. I also really enjoyed Westover‘s journey. I thought she showed incredible strength when dealing with her difficult family situation and to see her go from a young girl who had never set foot inside a classroom to a Cambridge PhD candidate was so inspiring.

Educated by Tara Westover is this week’s 50 Book Pledge Featured Read. Don’t forget to add it to your 50 Book Pledge shelf today!

Happy reading!
