Who is looking forward to the BEST summer ever: sunny weather, all the new books you could possibly need, and all-you-can-eat ice cream!! My favourite summer activity (besides reading outside) is taking a road trip to a far-off destination. And of course, one MUST bring along the perfect book to read during your road trip! We’ve compiled a list of our best reads for you to enjoy on the road this summer! Happy travelling!
Mariam Sharma Hits the Road by Sheba Karim
Surely any book that has “Hits the Road” in the title would be made for a road trip, right? After her freshman year at college, Mariam is looking forward to spending a quiet summer with her friends Ghazala and Umar. But when a scandalous photo of Ghaz is plastered on a billboard in Times Square, Miriam and Umar devise a plan to take a trip down to New Orleans and rescue Ghaz from her furious parents. This book has been compared to both Dumplin’ AND When Dimple Met Rishi, so yeah, you can definitely count us in.
When the financial crisis ruins Charles Wang’s business, he becomes mad at America. So mad, in fact, that he pulls his kids out of the school that he can no longer afford and takes the family on an epic cross-country road trip that includes an artsy (yet disgraced) hideout in New York, a temptress in New Orleans, and a smash-up in North Carolina. The Wangs vs. the World was compared to Little Miss Sunshine. That’s pretty high praise for a debut novel…
I See London I See France by Sarah Mlynowski
I mean, who hasn’t dreamed of spending a summer walking the streets of London and Paris? In this endlessly fun and hugely entertaining novel from Sarah Mlynowski, nineteen-year-old Sydney is going to do just that with her best friend Leela! But the dream vacation that Sydney has planned was not to be… Leela’s cheating ex shows up with his wildly attractive friend; Sydney needs to monitor her mother’s spiraling mental health via text message; and Sydney ultimately gets caught in a friendship tug of war that crosses the borders of Amsterdam, Switzerland, Italy, and France.
Listen, we love road trips. But it’s no secret that they can sometimes get, you know, boring. That’s why the Great Canadian Road Trip Puzzle Books were invented! Featuring word searches, crosswords, word ladders, acrostic puzzles, and more all focusing on Canadian places, names, and trivia, this series will help you pass the time in the car a little faster during those down times.
The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo
Okay, if you haven’t heard of The Alchemist, then maybe you need to reconsider your reading habits… Even LeBron James was recently spotted reading it courtside during a practice! Regarded as a modern classic The Alchemist tells to story of Santiago’s dream to travel far away in search of treasure. Santiago gets his wish, and he’s soon whisked away to a world of magic, wonder, and inspiration. We promise you will fly through this book once you pick it up!
Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter
Let’s pause here just so we can appreciate the cover for a second. Did you take it all in? Okay, good. Let’s carry on. Beautiful Ruins is a romantic story that begins on the coast of Italy and crosses the ocean to spark up again in Hollywood. Jess Walters is an acclaimed, award-winning author, and Beautiful Ruins is just the latest in his incredible body of work. Warning: This book will give you a severe case of wanderlust, possibly inspiring you to pack up your bags and make all of your European backpacking dreams come true.
Sleight by Jennifer Sommersby
Remember going to the circus as a kid? The wonder and amazement of it all… Well, this isn’t your regular circus, folks. Genevieve has grown up in a traveling circus, where she keeps wild animals as pets, works out with extravagant acrobats, and has a mother who is tortured by visions. One day, Genevieve’s mother falls to her death during an aerial routine and she learns of a new, wondrous world that she is sworn to protect. Sleight is a novel sure to dazzle your imagination!
How to Stop Time by Matt Haig
We’ve written about this one a couple times now, but we seriously can’t stress just how good it is, and just how wonderful Matt Haig is. The plot is fairly simple: Tom Hazard is a 400-year-old man who doesn’t age and has met Shakespeare, Captain Cook, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Pretty normal so far, right? But what happens when you’re a 400-year-old man who just fell in love with a woman named Camille that you met in a dog park? Do yourself a favour and read this book.
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
Let’s get this one out of the way first: this book has been called Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda meets the 1700. If, for whatever reason, that description wasn’t enough for you, here’s what the book is about: Monty, a young bisexual British lord embarks on a Grand Tour of Europe with his best friend, Percy, who he also just so happens to secretly have a crush on. Exploring the fine lines between friendship and love, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue is an irresistible story, perfect for readers of any age.
The Leisure Seeker by Michael Zadoorian
Fair warning, this one may make you cry. The Robinas – Ella, who has cancer, and John, who has Alzheimer’s – are tired of being forced into a dull life by their adult children and doctors. Desperate for one last adventure together, they hop in their ’78 Leisure Seeker RV and head down Route 66 toward Disneyland, trying to remember a past they’re having a particularly hard time remembering. Feisty, wise, and funny, The Leisure Seeker is a wonderfully moving book for anyone looking to break out of the mold and go on a long-overdue adventure, if only for a second.
Radiant Shimmering Light by Sarah Selecky
We cannot stop talking about this book! Telling the story of Lilian Quick and her journey for self-growth and discovery through her internet-famous cousin Florence (a.k.a. Eleven), Radiant Shimmering Light is Giller Prize nominee Sarah Selecky’s first fiction novel and one that is sure to entertain and inspire. Pick this book up ASAP! We know you’ll love it. Bonus: Radiant Shimmering Light is this week’s 50 Book Pledge Featured Read!
