50 Book Pledge Featured Read: The Book of M

Happy Monday, Savvy Readers! Looking for something new to read? How about something unique, compelling and utterly refreshing? Well, do I have the book for YOU! This week’s 50 Book Pledge Featured Read is a genre-bending apocalyptic story that is perfect to read this summer!

Equal parts literary fiction, sci-fi and thriller, The Book of M is the story of a young couple torn apart in the aftermath of a global catastrophe, as people who lose their shadows begin to lose their memories.

It starts as an eerie phenomenon in India, when people’s shadows begin to disappear. But it quickly turns darker, when the victims begin to lose their memories, including the basic skills to survive.

Flash forward to two years later, where we meet Max and her husband Ory, who have been surviving the post-apocalyptic world by hiding in an abandoned hotel. Max’s shadow has just disappeared, and to save Ory the pain of watching her disappear memory by memory, Max decides to set out on her own to find answers to “the Forgetting”.

As Ory attempts to find Max, he teams up with a group of other survivors who have heard rumours of a mysterious figure with a cure for shadowlessness in New Orleans. From shadowless bandits to creepy cult leaders, Max and Ory will both face unthinkable things as they search for a cure and for each other.

This is a dark, mysterious and fantastical novel. Think Station Eleven meets The Walking Dead (minus the zombies!) – it’s the perfect combination of beautiful writing and unique plot.

Told in alternating perspectives, The Book of M features a cast of characters that are intriguing and compelling, and you can’t help but get invested in them.

Even if you’re not a sci-fi reader, you will love the incredible writing and exquisite strangeness of The Book of M. It’s an interesting take on post-apocalyptic fiction and I could not put it down!

  1. I really enjoyed Station Eleven. I found it by accident and was very pleasantly surprised. Based on that comparison alone, I’ll be checking out this book!
