Bookmarks: December 21

Hi Savvy Readers! Welcome to the LAST Bookmarks of 2018!! (I know we said last week’s was our last, but we got a bit ahead of ourselves. December is confusing, okay!) It’s been a busy year of bookish news, and this week is no different.  We’ve got one more dose of the latest news from the world of books, so let’s get to it!

1. Canada Reads Returns

Canada’s favourite battle of the books is coming back! Actor and comedian Ali Hassan will return for his third round of hosting on Canada Reads 2019. The longlist will be revealed on Jan. 10, 2019, and the final five books and panelists who will defend each one will be revealed on January 31st. 2. The TPL’s Most Borrowed Book of 2018

How many Savvy Readers have a library card? Do you get good mileage out of it? The Toronto Public Library recently revealed the most borrowed books of the year, and the #1 book may surprise you. The Official MTO Driver’s Handbook takes the top slot, with 4,665 copies borrowed in 2018. Who would’ve thought?! Find out what other books made the Top 10 here.

3. A Very Special Gingerbread House

This might just be the greatest gingerbread house ever made! A team at Reynolds Kitchens spent three full days building a 60lb Hogwarts replica. It’s made of gingerbread, cake, crispy rice treats, and fondant. You can watch a timelapse of the team building the castle here!

4. Vote for the Best of the Year #HCCFanChoice!

It’s the last #HCCFanChoice of the year! HarperCollins Canada is looking for the Best of the Year 2018 Fan Choice Pick. The Summer 2018 HCC Fan Choice was Educated by Tara Westover— which book will follow in its footsteps? Nominate the best book you read this year here!
