50 Book Pledge Featured Read: Beautiful Bad

Hi Savvy Readers! Get ready for a whirlwind, stay-up-all-night-until-you-finish thrill of a novel! Beautiful Bad by Annie Ward is our Featured Read this week, and what a wild ride!

The story opens with the “Day of the Killing” and a frantic 911 call at a house in suburban Kansas. A crime occurs, but what? And who’s involved? The story quickly switches to 2001, where we meet a young woman named Maddie. She desperately wants to make a difference and live abroad, exploring the world. She moves to Bulgaria, where she works as a travel journalist. Maddie becomes fast friends with Jo, another journalist/thrill-seeker based in Macedonia. While visiting Jo one weekend in Macedonia, Maddie meets Ian, a tall, handsome and mysterious British bodyguard. They fall in love in what call only be described as a storybook romance.

For the rest of the novel, the plot alternates between past and present, sharing Maddie and Ian’s love story, and how they eventually find their happily ever after. Now, Maddie and Ian are married and raising their young son Charlie in Kansas.

But when Ian takes a job in Iraq for a security company, Maddie seeks out a therapist to help her with her anxiety. Through these sessions, Maddie reveals her fears of Ian’s PTSD, her concerns for her son’s safety, and the couple’s complicated past with Jo.

Beautiful Bad takes readers around the world, from the Balkans to England, Iraq to Manhattan, and to Ian and Maddie’s family home in Kansas. Sixteen years of love and fear culminate in The Day of the Killing. What in this beautiful home has gone so terribly bad?

With flawed and intense characters, adventurous scenery and twists and turns you will not be able to see coming, Beautiful Bad is a nail-biter right up to the last page. Even when you think you know what’s going on, another twist will happen and throw you off the scent.
