Savvy Readers, are you ready for something terrifying?! Maybe you’ve already seen the Netflix adaptation, but you are in for quite the ride with this book…

Bird Box by Josh Malerman was, yes, first a book before it was a Netflix movie. Hopefully you didn’t miss out on the chance to read it before you saw the movie, but if you did, trust us, it’s still worth the read!

Bird Box is a propulsive, terrifying tale set in an apocalyptic near-future world. It’s the story of a mother and her two small children who must make their way down a river, blindfolded. Because something is out there; something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence.

Five years after it began, only a handful of survivors remain, including Malorie and her children. Malorie has dreamed of escaping to a place where her and her family might be safe—unlike how she feels at the abandoned house near the river where they currently reside.

Now that her kids are four, Malorie decides it is time to go. But she knows the journey ahead will be terrifying—they’ll be headed twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. Is it a man, animal, or a monster?

Surrounded by sounds both familiar and frightening, and engulfed in the darkness, Malorie embarks on a trip that takes her to an unseen world and back in the past—to the companions who once saved her. But in a world gone mad, who can really be trusted?

Interweaving past and present, Josh Malerman’s breathtaking debut is a horrific and gripping snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page. And if you’re into The Road and Stephen King, Bird Box will be a sure hit for your TBR!

“[Bird Box is a] book that demands to be read in a single sitting, and through the cracks between one’s fingers. There has never been a horror story quite like this.” – Hugh Howey
