It’s Friday, Savvy Readers! What a great Friday! The Raptors won, and the bookish news was good, good, good all week! There’s a lot to look forward to in the world of books right now. From upcoming titles to movie adaptations and events, read on for the book news boost you need to get you to the weekend!

1. Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin won Hearst’s 2019 Big Book Prize (Cosmopolitan category)!

If you’ve been following us for a while, you know that we’re sending BIG love in author Uzma Jalaluddin’s direction 24/7 on every telepathic wavelength. We were so excited to see her hilarious debut novel, Ayesha at Last, recognized this week by Hearst’s 2019 Big Book Prize, winning Cosmopolitan Book of the Year! We fell in love with Ayesha and this modern Pride and Prejudice-inspired romance set in a modern-day Toronto Muslim community from the word go. How fantastic is it that Pascal Pictures is already making plans to adapt the book for film? Congratulations Uzma! Check out Hearst’s Big Book prize announcement here!

2. Margaret Atwood RAVES about the upcoming Rene Denfeld novel, The Butterfly Girl

The titan of CanLit speaks! Fresh off her stint as host of The Globe and Mail’s first ever Book Club (where, in case you missed it, she selected Barbara Gowdy’s The White Bone and hosted all us Savvy Readers in a world-class discussion of the Giller-winning novel’s themes), Margaret Atwood took to Twitter this week to give us a brand new recommendation ordained by the CanLit gods. As if we weren’t excited enough for a new novel to devour from the amazing Rene Denefeld, Atwood calls The Butterfly Girla heartbreaking, finger-gnawing, yet ultimately hopeful novel,” and ensured that we got amped right up to eleven for The Butterfly Girl’s release this October! Check out the tweet here!

3. Solitary by Albert Woodfox was acquired by Fox Searchlight and Mahershala Ali could play the lead!

Heads up Savvy MOVIE GOERS! Albert Woodfox’s astonishing memoir about the 43 YEARS he spent in solitary confinement – the longest stretch in U.S. history – will be coming to the big screen! Solitary is a powerful account of mental resilience in the face of cruel state practices, an unforgettable examination of a racially-biased justice system, and a clarion call to reform the inhumanity of solitary confinement in the U.S. and around the world. The depth, strength, and human dignity displayed in this memoir is unparalleled. Considering this, the news that Mahershala Ali (multi-award-winning actor of Moonlight, House of Cards, and Greenbook fame) has his eye on the role of Woodfox in the upcoming film could not feel more right. Who better to bring this powerful memoir to life on the screen?! Check out all the details here.

4. Entertainment ran an EXCLUSIVE excerpt from Followers, by Megan Angelo

Followers won’t be coming our way until January 2020, Savvy Readers, but the celebrity culture satire is already generating some major buzz. Bestselling author and cocreator of Broad City, Abbi Jacobson, says: “If anyone is going to explore a future version of our high-tech, internet-obsessed culture, please let it be Megan Angelo. Followers is pure gold.” High praise from New York Times bestseller, Savvy Readers! This week finally got a taste for ourselves, curtesy of Entertainment! Check out the exclusive excerpt they ran this week and tell us what you think!

5. Sarah Dessen events THIS SUNDAY!!!

Sarah Dessen, author of the too-good YA novel, The Rest of the Story, will be hitting Indigo Oshawa and Yorkdale this weekend to discuss her dreamy, new YA Romance (Which, if you didn’t already know, was this week’s  50 Book Pledge Featured Read!) and meet fans – A.K.A.
