50 Book Pledge Featured Read: The Killer Inside

Halloween may be over, but spooky season continues here at the Savvy Reader! After all, there’s nothing better to do in fall than curl up with a hot drink, a warm blanket, and a spooky book, right? As a bit of a departure from last week’s 50 Book Pledge Featured Read, we’re returning to the thriller genre for our fill of frights.

Cass Green, a favourite here at the Savvy Reader, is the author of Don’t You Cry and the beloved psychological thriller In A Cottage, In A Wood, and her latest installment – The Killer Inside – is just as good and twisty as that book! That’s why The Killer Inside is this week’s 50 Book Pledge Featured Read! Are you ready to dive in? Let’s get to it!

Despite coming from radically different backgrounds, Anya and Elliot, happily married, are madly in love with each other. Elliot was raised in a single parent household with his father in prison, while Anya grew up in a privileged home. Anya is pretty and sweet, Elliot is a charming schoolteacher. Everything seems to be on the up and up, right? But, since this is a thriller, we know that something has to be wrong, and boy is that ever true. In a nice twist on the genre tropes, both Anya and Elliot have their own secrets they’ve buried deep inside them. Secrets that are about to come to light… especially when bizarre things start happening to Elliot.

Enter Irene, a widow in her 70s whose son Liam disappeared in 2003 without a trace. Some 15 or so years later, we follow as she begins to worry that her eldest son has also disappeared after she fails to make contact with him. With the help of a neighbour, she discovers that her eldest son has taken off, saying that he has finally discovered what happened to his brother all those years ago…

Weaving back and forth between Elliot and Irene’s narration, The Killer Inside intricately weaves these two seemingly disconnected stories together, ultimately culminating in a shocking, unputdownable ending that you have to read to believe. Maybe these characters aren’t so perfect after all, and all hell is about to break loose when those secrets start bubbling up to the surface.

The thing that makes Cass Green such a wonderfully brilliant writer is her ability to craft compulsive, addictive reads while simultaneously turning the tropes of the genre on its head each time, and The Killer Inside is certainly no exception to that! This book is a slow-burn thriller that will keep you guessing right up until the very end of the story. Receiving unanimous praise from esteemed authors like Ruth Ware, Erin Kelly, and Alex Lake, The Killer Inside is the perfect book to curl up with this fall! Add it to your 50 Book Pledge shelf today!

Happy reading,

Jesse
