Well, Savvy Readers. This is it. The last Featured Read of the 2019 50 Book Pledge. Isn’t it wild how fast this year went by?! I do have some good news, though. Though this book is the last Featured Read of 2019, it’s also the first of January. That’s right, Savvy Readers. This book is so good that we’re ending 2019 and kicking off 2020 with it!
Everyone knows that January is dominated by thrillers, for one reason or another. And we’re not talking your everyday, run-of-the-mill thrillers either. What were the last two books that kicked off our 50 Book Pledge, you ask? Oh, just a couple little known books called The Woman in the Window and The Perfect Girlfriend. Yeah, we know. That’s what we mean when we say January is the month for thrillers, and Tarryn Fisher‘s latest novel, The Wives, is certainly no exception.
You think you know your significant other, right? That you’ve got it all figured out? Well, just how sure can you be about that? Imagine that your husband has two other wives. You’ve never met the other wives – none of you know each other – and because of this… unconventional arrangement, you can only see your husband one day a week. That’s not a problem for you, though, because you love him so much. Or at least that’s what you’ve told yourself…
But one day, while you’re doing your laundry, you find a scrap of paper in his pocket – a scrap of paper that indicates he’s meeting up with Hannah, another one of his wives, in a couple days. Suddenly, you’re obsessed. You need to know Hannah, and you need to know all of the other wives in this arrangement. You deserve to know, right? So, you track her down. You even strike up a friendship (under false pretenses, of course). But then Hannah starts showing up to your meetings with bruises – telltale signs that she’s being abused by her husband. Your husband. But you’ve never known him to be violent… Who exactly is your husband, and how far would you go to find the truth? Would you risk your own life? And where’s the third wife in all of this?
Told from the perspective of Thursday, readers are dropped right into the middle of a pulse-pounding, fast-paced suspense novel that will leave you breathless. We can’t give much more away about the plot without spoiling the whole thing – and, trust us, you will not want this to be spoiled for you – but we can say that this is genuinely one of the wildest, most twisted, most shocking thrillers you will ever read. Savvy Readers, there is unputdownable, and then there is un👏put👏down👏a👏ble👏. I think you know which one this is.
So long, 2019, and thanks for all the fish. See you in a couple days, 2020.
Happy reading (and Happy New Year’s!),
