My Book Pledge: Frequently Asked Questions

NOTE: Updates to the 2020 Book Pledge are still in progress. Thank you for your patience while we get everything up and running.

What is the My Book Pledge?

The Savvy Reader team created so you as a reader can keep track of the books you read, see what your friends are reading, earn fun badges, enter contests and giveaways, participate in readathons, and more!

How do I sign up?

You can sign up on through your Facebook or Twitter account, or by entering your email.

What do I do if I receive an error message when trying to login?

If you’re receiving an error message when trying to login for the first time in a new year, you can fix the issue by doing one of the following.

  1. Go to a separate browser window and log out of the social network (Twitter or Facebook) that you log in with. Once you’re signed out, go back to and click to log in with your social network of choice. The My Book Pledge site will direct you to the log in page for Twitter or Facebook. Enter your credentials and you’ll be redirected to your signed in My Book Pledge profile.
  2. Clear your cache and cookies from your web browser, then attempt signing in again.

How do I add a book to my shelf?

Once you are logged in, add a book to your shelf by clicking on the “+Add Book” button in the top toolbar of the webpage. You will be prompted to choose which bookshelf you’d like to add to. The other option is to click on “My Shelves” from the same top toolbar, and then the shelf of your choice (Read, Currently Reading, To Be Read, etc.). In the top righthand corner of your shelf, click “+Add Book” and a search bar will appear.

How do I access my shelves from years past?

Once logged in, go to “My Shelves” in the top toolbar. You will be brought to the Read shelf for the current year. On the right side of the screen, you will see a “Navigation” dropdown menu with each year you have participated. Click on the year you would like to access. Once that is loaded, click on the shelf you would like to see.

What if the book I add isn’t there?

If you can’t find a book you’re looking for, please try the following:

  1. Search the book in the “+Add Book” search bar in the top righthand corner of your shelf (as opposed the search page in the banner)
  2. Try searching for alternate spelling of the title
  3. Search for the author’s name
  4. Search for the book’s ISBN (you can find this on any publisher or retailer website)

If your book still isn’t showing up, try using the “Add a Custom Book” option located under the “+Add a Book” search bar.

How is my list of Friends formulated?

Upon signing up, My Book Pledge will pull your friends from the social media account you sign up with. In order to connect with a new friend, you must Follow them. The follow button will show up on their profile. To find friends to Follow, access their profile by clicking on the links they share on Twitter. The Follow button will appear on all of their shelves, too.

If you want to search for a user, use the Search bar on the home page. After your initial search, make sure you select “People”. Handy tip: If you can’t find a friend via their full name, try their Twitter handle, Facebook name or email address.

  1. The march madness badge isn’t showing up on my list I’d available badges … I thought there was a new list and contest for 2019

    1. Hi Len! There will be one incoming, we’re just working on getting everything live with it! Stay tuned 🙂

    2. Hi again, Len! We just wanted to follow-up and let you know that the HCC March Madness badge is live now, so the next time you add a book to your read shelf, it should auto-populate to your page. If it doesn’t, please do let us know!

  2. Hi, I read The Great Gatsby earlier one the year, but the HCC March Madness badge did not appear. Do I have to read these books specifically in March?

    1. Hi May! No, you don’t have to read them specifically in March – because there are so many different versions of The Great Gatsby out there, we might have missed one! Can you send us an email with a link to your profile and we’ll add it from there?

  3. HI there! I have not been able to log in with Facebook since the day last week when Facebbok was down. When I press Log In, I only get option to sign in using email, but when I tried to do so, I was directed to sign in through Facebook (or Twitter). I have messaged HarperCollins and was told it was probably related to the shutdown and should be fixed soon. However, it has been several days and the issue hasn’t been resolved. I have logged out and signed back in to all devices.
Any info or advice would be appreciated!

    1. Hi Susan! If you’re still having this issue, would you mind sending an email to We haven’t heard of this issue yet, so we definitely want to get to the bottom of it! If you could also include a screenshot of what’s happening when you try to login via Facebook, that would be immensely helpful.

  4. Whenever I access the app it always pulls up 2018 not 2019 on my shelves to add on new books. I have to choose 2019 from the drop down … is there something I need to do to reset it for 2019 ?

    1. Hi Cheryl! While you’re on your shelf, click on the book you would like to delete. When the book’s page loads, you should see a “remove from shelf” button right underneath the shelf!

    1. Oh no! Sorry about that, Liette. Can you send us a link to your 50 Book Pledge user profile? We’ll get right on adding it for you!

      1. Perfect! I’ve added it to your profile. The next time you add a book to your read shelf, it should show up! Let us know if it doesn’t, okay?

    1. Hi Denise, this issue was related to a server error but should be fixed now. Are you still seeing an error message?

    1. Hi Brittany! There isn’t currently an iPhone app available, but stay tuned in 2020 – you may be pleasantly surprised!

    1. Hi Donna! We completely agree that every book counts 🙂 This is a known issue and we’ve passed it along to our developers, who are working on fixing this issue as quickly as possible.

  5. I finished The Butterfly Girl on Dec 31, 2019. Is there a way to add it to my 2019 finished shelf now that we’re in a new year?

  6. Logged in January 1st 2020, forced to create a new year, but my entire history is missing. I assume it will be found and returned.

  7. Signed in with Facebook as I always have – but due to new website name it shows I have no books from last year. How do I get this back?

    1. Hi Diane, this is a known issue and we’re working with our developers to get this fixed as we speak.

    1. Hi Penny, this is a known issue and we’re working with our developers to get this fixed as we speak.

  8. Also logged in on 1/1/20 and lost my entire history as well. My first attempt to comment on this was also deleted. Will my history be fixed?

    1. Hi Marlene, this is a known issue and we’re working with our developers to get this fixed as we speak.

  9. I attempted to log in on January 2, 2020 to create my pledge for the year. On my mobile device it took multiple tries, and once I succeeded in logging on, all of my previous years history is gone…like it never existed. I have been participating at least since 2015!
Thinking it may have been a glitch on mobile devices, I tried logging on with my computer, only to find out that I can not!
There is no option for facebook log in through a computer…but there is for twitter…
I really don’t want to loose all the data I have saved in the past 5 years…
Please tell me this is something that will be worked on…

  10. Hey so I’m trying to update my pledge for this year but can’t seem to find where to do so on the new layout. Can anyone tell me where it is now? Thanks.

    1. Hi! If you click the “My Profile” tab on the blue menu, you should see a button that says “Update Your Profile” on the left side, underneath your favourite book of 2019. Click that, and you can edit your pledge level!

  11. When I move a book to the finished shelf, nothing appears to happen. The book does move, but no visible action takes place, no confirmation displays.

    1. Thanks for letting us know, John! We’ll work with our developers to add in some kind of messaging to confirm that the move has taken place.
